Rough sketches for the first few panels of Sublimation
Next comes refined sketches, color and value studies, then work on the final panels/gifs (those blue bits will glow via animation)

Gerhard Richter, Betty (1988)
I went to a lecture once that a prolific writer in the art world gave. It was about, amongst other things, the “philosophy of beauty in art”, which I won’t try and elaborate on here. He was fantastic and engaging. He told us that to him Richter’s painting of his daughter, Betty, was the most beautiful painting in the world. He used the phrase “the most beautiful painting in the world,”. You don’t see her face, but you’re waiting and waiting for her to turn her blonde head to you, and you know that when she does you will see “the most beautiful face in the world,”. That is another thing he said.
I also think this painting is very beautiful, but I think it says something about our aesthetics if we’re struck by the beauty of something we can’t fully see. Perhaps anticipation is an aspect of beauty? I wouldn’t be able to answer that confidently.
Kierkegaard: “Pleasure disappoints, possibility never.”
I got to see this in person at SLAM. It really is beautiful. The out of focus print of her jacket pulls at your eyes. It makes demands of you.
Nimit frickin’ Malavia
I love those lines. When I shotgun my RSS reader, scrolling through pictures like I’m Alex being brain-washed, total information overload, I still see Nimit Malavia’s lines in the 5-posts-a-second blur.
Best part is this is a print.

LOOK AT THAT NOSE! LOOK AT IT! Makes this little moan-grunt-grumble of affirmation escape from deep in my throat.

The finished drawing (see next post for complete GIF)
I’m done! YAY! Took awhile (tues-thurs) but I’m pretty much satisfied with the way it turned out.
Inspired by this painting (NSFW) by Conrad Roset. Check out his photostream, the Schiele influences are pretty obvious. I love Schiele. Just google Schiele (NSFW, at all) and you’ll see what I mean.

The post with this image in it (titled ‘static goo’) only appears in their RSS feed. The post itself is missing.
